Crash Cage / Engine Guard
A protective frame structure that absorbs impact during a fall instead of the engine and bodywork.
What is it
A crash cage is a metal structure bolted to the motorcycle frame that extends beyond the engine and bodywork. During a fall, the crash cage takes the impact instead of expensive components.
How it works
In a lowside, the bike slides on its side. Without a crash cage, the engine, radiator, and fairings grind on asphalt — thousands in repairs. With a crash cage, the bars slide instead — the bike is barely damaged. Some designs also protect the rider's legs from being pinned.
What to look for
- Material — chromoly steel is better than standard
- Full coverage — protect both upper and lower sections
- Sliders — plastic or nylon tips reduce friction
- For beginners — an essential accessory
