Helmet Types
An overview of motorcycle helmet types — from full-face to open. Each type offers a different protection level.
What is it
A motorcycle helmet is a rider's primary safety equipment. Several types exist, each with different protection levels and comfort profiles. Choosing the right helmet is one of the most important safety decisions.
How it works
A helmet has an outer shell (distributes impact) and inner EPS foam (absorbs energy). On impact, the foam compresses, reducing the force transmitted to the head. Every helmet is single-use: after a significant impact, it must be replaced.
What to look for
- Full-face — maximum protection, covers the entire face and chin. 35% of impacts hit the chin
- Modular — flip-up chin bar, more convenient but heavier and less rigid
- Open-face (3/4) — no chin protection, less coverage
- Half-helmet — minimal protection, not recommended
- Certification: ECE 22.06 (Europe), SNELL, DOT — verify before buying
