ABS (Anti-lock Braking)

1 min read

A system that prevents wheel lockup during braking — allowing you to maintain control and steering.

What is it

ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) is an electronic system that monitors wheel rotation during braking. If a wheel begins to lock, ABS automatically modulates brake pressure dozens of times per second, maintaining traction and steering ability.

How it works

Sensors on each wheel track rotation speed. When one wheel decelerates significantly faster than the other (a sign of lockup), the ABS module pulses the brake pressure. You feel this as a vibration in the lever. The result — shorter stopping distance and maintained steering control.

What to look for

  • ABS doesn't replace braking skill — it helps in critical moments
  • On dirt and gravel, ABS may increase stopping distance
  • Practice emergency braking with and without ABS — know the difference
  • When buying a motorcycle — ABS significantly reduces fatal crash risk
