Car Door Opening

1 min read

A driver or passenger opens a parked car door directly into a motorcyclist's path.

What is it

Dooring is when a parked car's door suddenly opens into a motorcyclist's path. The door becomes a wall you ride into. Even at low speed, it can knock you off the bike.

How it happens

A rider travels along a row of parked cars. A driver or passenger opens the door without checking the mirror or looking back. The rider either hits the door or swerves into other traffic.

How to reduce the risk

  • Keep distance from parked cars — at least one door width (3-5 feet)
  • Watch for signs: parking lights on, shadow movement inside, brake lights
  • Slow down past rows of parked cars
  • Never ride in the «door zone» — even if it seems more convenient
