Noob Mistakes
The most common beginner motorcyclist mistakes — from whiskey throttle to overriding skill level.
What is it
Noob mistakes are the set of typical errors new motorcyclists make. Knowing these mistakes in advance lets you avoid them — or at least be prepared. The first year is the most dangerous in a motorcyclist's career.
How it happens
- Too powerful a first bike — doesn't match skill level
- Whiskey throttle — panic grip reflex opens the throttle
- Rear-brake-only stopping — ignoring the front brake
- Riding without gear — «it's just a short ride»
- Riding above skill level — copying experienced friends
How to reduce the risk
- Start with a bike under 48 hp — learn, then upgrade
- Take a basic riding course — MSF or equivalent
- Practice fundamentals in a parking lot: braking, maneuvers, turns
- Don't ride with groups initially — ride at your own pace
